With Bernadette Peters triumphing as Desiree Armfeldt in the summer re-boot of Sondheim's A Little Night Music, Broadway.com asked fans what other current Broadway leading lady roles they'd like the two-time Tony winner to take over. The votes are in, and fans would most like to see Peters join Next to Normal's Goodman household as troubled mother Diana. The mammoth role in the Pulitzer Prize winning musical, which earned original star Alice Ripley a Tony in 2009, pulled in 31% of the votes.
Readers also think Bernadette was born to boogie. The role of Mrs. Wilkinson, the weary but determined dance teacher in Billy Elliot, followed in second place with 16% of votes. (Peters already has Mrs. Wilkinson's signature bright red hair!) Third place goes to another Dancing Queen of a role: Donna Sheridan in Mamma Mia! Thirteen percent of fans want Peters to don the ABBA attire and tear into hits like "The Winner Takes It All."
Another motherly role lands in fourth place: Morticia from The Addams Family. The ooky matriarch pulled in 11% of votes. The name on everybody's lips would definitely be Roxie if Peters were to take over as Chicago's resident jailbird. The long running revival's leading lady rounds out the top five with 8% of votes.
Thanks for voting!
